Katie Richardson, owner and artist of Blue Barn Studios, has been creating for as long as she can remember. She attended Hampshire College, where she fell in love with making art from fire. She studied art and music, and completed a multimedia installation thesis project dealing with immigration issues. Katie has gone on to create a variety of sculptural works building on these ideas, while also creating an active craft business. Her sculptural work has been shown locally and regionally, and her craft work can be found in multiple MA galleries. She currently lives on a farm in Hadley, MA, where she has her studios.
Blue Barn Studios, formerly known as Katie Ray Arts, creates finely crafted housewares, jewelry and other accessories from flameworked glass and welded steel. Katie loves the physicality and transformative magic of working with these marterials. She hopes to enrich peoples’ lives with beautiful and functional objects that delight the eye and remind people of the creativity in humanity. Katie teaches classes and workshops at her home studios, as well as local art centers. She has taught at SnowFarm’s Summer High School Art Program, and was previously the coordinator for Get Up Get Down, an arts- for-change program that engages youth in art and activism through public art, murals and metalwork. Katie is a founding member of Artisans of WMASS.
Katie is also an elementary ELL Teacher (English Language Learner), and enjoys working with students from many different cultures. She earned her M.Ed from UMASS Amherst in 2010. As an artist and an educator, Katie is committed to creativity, community, justice and joy. Katie is currently pursuing her MFA in Visual Arts at Vermont College of Fine Arts, focusing on sculpture that explores issues of the body, disease and technology.
